Abstract Objective: Myofibroblasts have been associated with the development of several pathologic fibrotic conditions. This longitudinal study aims to assess the proliferative and antiapoptotic effects of cyclosporin, nifedipine and phenytoin on gingival connective tissue cells of nonhuman primate, as well as to analyze a possible role of myofibroblasts in gingival overgrowth. Materials and Methods: Gingival samples from the right superior canine area were obtained from 12 male monkeys ( Sapajus spp ) to comprise the control group. After one week, the animals were randomly assigned to three groups, which received daily oral doses of cyclosporin, nifedipine or phenytoin for 120 days. Gingival samples were collected from the left superior canine area of two animals of each group at 52 and 120 days. Histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and immunoreacted against α-SMA, Ki- 67 and bcl-2. Results: α-SMA immunoreaction was negative in the control and experimental groups. Similarly, no difference between groups concerning immunostaining against Ki-67 and bcl-2 was observed in connective tissue cells. Conclusion: Based on this methodology, it may be concluded that gingival overgrowths induced by cyclosporin, nifedipine and phenytoin are not associated with neither myofibroblast transdifferentiation, proliferation nor apoptosis of gingival connective cells in monkeys.

Mouth lymphoepithelial cyst is rare, with few cases reported in literature. The aim of this article is to describe a clinical case, focusing on clinical and diagnostic aspects, treatment and prognosis. The lesion was one year old and had developed as a fibrous nodule in the jugal mucosa of a 71-year-old leucoderma patient. Considering focal inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, fibroma and mucocele as differential diagnosis, excisional biopsy was carried out. A cystic cavity limited by pseudostratified epithelium without projections into the conjunctive tissue, with lymphoid tissue within, was microscopically identified. Without postoperative adverse events, the one-year clinical followup confirmed the favorable prognosis of this kind of lesion.

Un quiste linfoepitelial bucal es raro, con pocos casos reportados en la literatura. El objetivo de este artículo es describir un caso clínico, centrándose en los aspectos clínicos y diagnósticos, tratamiento y pronóstico. La lesión tuvo un año de evolución, y se había desarrollado como un nódulo fibroso en la mucosa yugal de un paciente de 71 años de edad con leucoderma. Teniendo en cuenta la hiperplasia fibrosa inflamatoria, fibroma y mucocele como diagnósticos diferenciales, se llevó a cabo una biopsia por escisión. Una cavidad quística limitada por epitelio pseudoestratificado sin proyecciones en el tejido conjuntivo, con tejido linfoide en el interior fue identificado microscópicamente. No se observaron eventos adversos postoperatorios, y el seguimiento clínico al año confirmó el pronóstico favorable de este tipo de lesión.

This study demonstrated that a significant number of bacteria is present in the radicular dentinal tubules of periodontally diseased human teeth. Ten periodontally diseased teeth were prepared and stained by Brown and Brenn technique for histological examination. Bacteria were detected in all teeth. It is suggested that bacteria may invade dentinal tubules exposed to periodontal pocket and are very hard to be eliminated by conventional mechanical and chemical periodontal therapy. Contaminated dentinal tubules of periodontally diseased teeth can thus act as active bacterial reservoirs to promote recolonization of mechanically treated root surfaces, which could interfere with the periodontal healing and progression of the disease.

O tumor odontogênico adenomatóide (TOA) é uma lesão clinicamente benigna, cujas discussões acerca de sua natureza hamartomatosa ou neoplásica, e provável célula epitelial odontogênica de origem ainda existem. Este projeto de pesquisa teve por objetivo estudar o assunto através da detecção imuno-histoquímica das citoqueratinas, laminina, colágeno IV, PCNA e p53, utilizando-se para isso 08 amostras do tumor e 08 amostras de folículo pericoronário contendo epitélio reduzido do órgão do esmalte (EROE). Os resultados mostraram que a marcação da CK14 sinalizou graus de diferenciação para ameloblastos secretores ou pós-secretores nas estruturas adenomatóides do TOA, e a laminina presente em sua superfície luminal foi compatível com o EROE durante o "estágio protetor" da amelogênese. O PCNA marcou especificamente áreas enoveladas e cordões periféricos do TOA, indicando serem estes os responsáveis pelo seu crescimento. Após considerações sobre patogênese, os autores propuseram natureza hamartomatosa e histogênese a partir do EROE para o TOA.

The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a clinically benign lesion. Discussions about the AOT hamartomatous or neoplastic nature, and the probable odontogenic epithelial cell it originates from still exist. This research aimed to study and discuss the subject by the immunohistochemical detection of cytokeratins, laminin, collagen IV, PCNA and p53 in 8 tumor samples and 8 dental follicle samples containing reduced enamel epithelium. The results have shown that CK14 labelling indicated differentiation grades for secreting ameloblasts or ameloblasts in the post-secreting stage in the adenomatoid structure of AOT. Laminin, found on the luminal surface of adenomatoid structures, was compatible with the reduced enamel epithelium during the "protective stage of amelogenesis". PCNA specifically labelled the spindled areas and peripheral cords of the AOT, indicating that these areas are responsible for tumor growth. After considerations about pathogenesis, the authors suggested that the nature of AOT is hamartomatous with histogenesis from the reduced enamel epithelium.

Os leiomiossarcomas são neoplasias malignas provenientes da musculatura lisa que freqüentemente requerem a utilização de técnicas especiais de coloração para o estabelecimento do diagnóstico. Embora incomuns em boca, neste trabalho são relatados dois casos de leiomiossarcoma. Após biópsia incisional das lesões e análise dos cortes em H.E, os espécimes foram submetidos à técnica histoquímica do Tricromio de Masson. Ambos os casos apresentaram reatividade para tecido muscular. Entretanto, um deles apresentou um componente fibroso bastante proeminente, gerando dúvidas acerca do diagnóstico. Por essa razão, foi utilizado um painel imuno-histoquímico composto pelos seguintes marcadores antigênicos: vimentina, AML, S100, CD34, CD68, fator XIIIA e AE1/AE3. Os dois casos mostraram-se positivos para vimentina e AML, confirmando o diagnóstico de leiomiossarcoma.

Leiomyosarcomas are malign neoplasms arising in the smooth muscle. The occurrence in the oral region, since its scarcity in this particular anatomical site, requests the utilization of special techniques for the diagnostic establishment. Here the authors relate two cases of this uncommon pathology. After the incisional biopsy and histological analysis the specimens were submitted to the histochemical technique of Masson's Tricrome to confirm the muscular origin of the tumors. Both cases confirmed the origin, but in one the staining pattern was not so clear, generating some doubts about the diagnosis. For this reason, the immunohistochemical analysis was performed utilizing antibodies anti vimentin, SMA, S100, CD34, CD68, XIIIA and AE1/AE3. Both cases showed positivity to vimentin and SMA, confirming the smooth muscle origin and the diagnosis.
